Film screening and discussion with director Peres Owino
Join us for a free screening of Bound: Africans vs. African Americans and conversation with director Peres Owino. Together, we’ll explore how history shapes the ways Africans and African Americans see one another—and what it takes to build stronger connections.
Through personal stories and candid conversations, Bound examines the tensions and misunderstandings between these communities alongside their different experiences of slavery, colonialism, and life in the diaspora. The film also opens a conversation about identity, belonging, and the possibilities for reconnection.
The film invites us to deepen ongoing conversations about how we understand one another. Through guided dialogue, participants will reflect on their own experiences, consider perspectives different from their own, and explore how we can challenge misunderstandings and build connections between Africans and African Americans.
The event also includes a brief introduction to The African Kinship Reunion (TAKiR) and the Illinois Family Roots Pilot Program. Interested in exploring your own family connections? Learn about participating in the program and pick up a free DNA kit.
Everyone is welcome. Bring your questions, your perspective, and a willingness to listen.
